Wattle Painting

Wattle Painting

The natural world is a giant, open-ended learning laboratory. Children are innate scientists and love to experience the sights, scents, sounds, and textures of the outdoors. Nature provides countless opportunities for discovery, creativity, and problem-solving. Often, when involved in the natural world, even boisterous, active children may slow down and learn to focus on being gentle.

Through the Leaf art projects and wattle brush painting children can benefit in various ways -

  • utilise large motor skills (hands and arms) rather than fine motor skills.

  • learn about plants, leaf shapes and colours.

  • make observations about colour blending.

  • observe the different tracks their leaves make as they're swished and tapped on the paper.

  • Picking up leaves , sticking them together, painting and colouring -all requires the use of tiny muscles , hand -eye coordination .

What to do:

Look around in your own backyard with your children or when you are out for a walk

- Collect twigs, leaves of different shapes and colours.

- You can set up a fun activity (indoor or outdoor) with scissors, string, hole punch, paints, paper, paint boards, googly eyes, glue etc.

- Children can dip leaves of different shapes and sizes to do their own leaf painting or you can help children to punch holes in leaves and do leaf threading. Creating a leafy monster with googly eyes can be super fun too.

-Watch the video of the wattle brush painting and you can make your own natural paint brush and enjoy being creative!
